Warnemunde, Germany

Warnemunde, Germany
Our day in the port of Warnemunde, a former fishing village, the gateway to Berlin started at 10am.  The ship docked at 7am but as we have a long day in port.... all aboard at 8.30pm... we decided to take our time.

Our plans were to stay locally and not go into Berlin as it is about 160 miles.... a good 3 hours drive both ways.  We will go to Berlin another time and spend a few days there as it is a great city and lots to see.

We decided to get the train into Rostock first which is about a 20 minute journey.  Once at Rostock you change to the Metro to take you into NeuerMarkt, the main square.  We purchased an all day ticket for 5 euros that gave us access to buses, trains and trams.  We thought this to be good value.  A taxi would cost around 28 euros one way.  You must remember to validate your ticket on the station before getting in the train.  This is the case in most countries that we have been in where we have used the train or metro.  Interestingly just about every time we have been on public transport in whatever country an inspector has come on to check tickets.

Once in the main square we followed our walking route that we downloaded before we left home to visit all the sights that we wanted to see.  Rostock is a delightful seaside village with lots of beautiful open squares, buskers, markets and beautiful old buildings steeped in history.

After exhausting our list of things to see and revitalising over lunch we made our way back to the Metro and to the train back to Warnemunde (pronounced Verna-moon-day).

It was now mid afternoon and the sun was shining and it was hot!  Quite hot.... and our energy was waning and our legs complaining....

Once back in Warnemunde we walked around the beautiful picturesque Canal that was overloaded with fishing vessels.  The old fishermen's houses were quaint and well cared for and a real tourist attraction now... no doubt a very sort after and expensive area to live or stay.

After exhausting our energy we stopped off at a bar overlooking the Canal for a cool refreshment.  Unfortunately no free internet but a free toilet.  In Rostock there were lots of free internet hot spots throughout the town but you did have to pay 60c to use the WC.

All on board was 8.30pm but we were back on just after 7.  Another tiring but successful day in port.  This holidaying is hard work!! A well earned sea day tomorrow and our all important Captain's luncheon and our first formal night.  We have 2 on this cruise....

Next port of call Tallinn, Estonia.
